what is growing on my rock and sand?

It started on my rock and now has moved to the sand. When the powerhead hits it, it sort of waves around so it seems to be soft. It looks like it will eventually cover the rock completely like a blanket. I assume it needs to be removed but what is it?

I checked it out further and it peeled right off a small piece of rock I pulled out of the tank. It is soft and came off almost in one whole piece. Any ideas?

Is your tank exposed to sunlight?

It's not exposed to sunlight. It probably grew that big over the course of two or three months. I have been out of town for work over that time period and came home to that. The tank is doing very well otherwise.
