Anyone use a Magdrive as an external pump?

Does anyone use a Magdrive pump for external?

If so, any issues such as leaking, noise, excessive heat?

Thanks,
Ken

Never used one as an external pump, but the mag 12 I had on my 100g was fairly load and put out some heat, and that was in water I can only image what it would do outside of the sump.

I had some Mag24's that came with my used setup that I used for the water storage/mixing station. They're both seized and trip the breaker. I'll never buy a mag-drive pump.

I actually am using a Mag 12 internally to run a venturi skimmer. It is dead quiet and doesn't throw more than a degree into the water.

I wanted to try it on another skimmer which is a recirculating skimmer. I was going to use it externally. I wasn't sure how it would perform.

Ken, my Mag24 always leaked slightly from around the volute. No matter how much I tried I couldn't fix it - then I decided it was noisy and inefficient so it went to a new home.

I ran my Mag 7 external it ran hot so I put a cheap fan on it, no problems. I have read that they are not suppose to be ran external, but that was a long time ago.

I have run mags dry before. One was my return pump and the other a closed loop. They ran that way for over two years with no issues. I forget the size, but they were both atleast 9's if not bigger. They did stay more than warm to the touch so I kept fans on them.
