Cyanobacteria (not actually an algae) is usually regarded as a pest in aquariums (there are even several medications to get rid of it). It can be very fast growing and smother coral and coat all surfaces of your tank in a fruit roll looking substance. Most people will tell you to try to get rid of it as soon as it appears. Wiping as much as you can up and then leaving the lights off (as well as covering it to prevent ambient light) for four days or so along with keeping really clean water can often be enough to get rid of it.

Fun Facts:
Cyanobacteria was once responsible for killing 80% of the life on Earth due to the great Oxygenation of Earth
A type of cyanobacteria is eaten as a supplement called Spirulina.
