Critique my sump design please.
Hey guys, was wondering what you guys of my sump design so far.
This will be for a 100 gallon tank, 40 breeder using 3/8 inch glass for the baffles inside. Return pump on this is 550 gph using flexible piping, overflow drains are straight down so there should not be much reduction in the 550 gph. Skimmer is SWC 160, the intake will be under around 7 inches of water. Im planning on having only some sand, chaeto, pods, and cuc in the fuge, no liverock or anything else. Questions I have 1. Are the sections too tall? I don't really want to waste any space since the gallonage for the return and refugium are already so small. 2. Should I make the height difference between each section 1 inch like it is or 1/2 inch? 3. Is around 5 gallons volume for the return too small? I will have a tunze ato so not sure if the size matters unless the ato fails. If you have any other suggestions please let me know, thanks for your help!

Your pictures are huge you might want to resize them so that we can look at them will out having to scroll all over the place.
For the most post it look like a very solid design.

Questions I have
1. Are the sections too tall? I don't really want to waste any space since the gallonage for the return and refugium are already so small. your baffle height looks fine. You want to have room in your sump for drain back from the DT tank. 2. Should I make the height difference between each section 1 inch like it is or 1/2 inch? Dont think it will matter. My sump baffle heights are 1/2 or less on each side of the fuge section. 3. Is around 5 gallons volume for the return too small? I will have a tunze ato so not sure if the size matters unless the ato fails. 5 Gal in the return is substantial. mine is much less... ATO will keep the return level consistent so no worries. You may want to make your baffles black to limit light from your fuge section from bleeding into the other sections and causing unwanted corraline and other algae growth.

As someone who asked for similar advice yesterday, I'm just going to say "Hi"
Why do your sections decrease in height? That seems unnecessary. |
