Quarantine Tank
I have a 75 gallon tank and want to start a 24/7 quarantine tank. How big of a tank should I use? I have an empty 20 high, is that good enough? How many fish could I quarantine in a 20 high?
I am planning to using HOB filter and a power head. Is a 30g HOB filter big enough? I plan on using water from my DT to start and for water change. Is that a good idea? I know I have been doing SW for a little while and I have never done a QT and I have had a lot of problems. So I am trying to do right from here on out. Thanks for the help!!! |

A 20 gallon QT should be more than fine. I wouldn't put more than 3, depending on their size and temperament, in at one time. Assuming there us no disease in your QT I would use the water. If you haven't started to seed a sponge already then you could use a pice of LR to get the QT going then put it back into the main prior to adding any livestock. Don't forget to feed it every once in a while. Congrats on a very wise decision

I vote for QT'ing one fish at a time. If you have multiple fish in 1 QT, and if you have to medicate one of the fish, your QT clock for the other fish starts over.
If they're small fish, like Gobies, or Blennies, then 2-3 fish is my answer.

Read the QT Sticky. You have to decide if you want a pretty QT with sand and rocks or a barebottom. If you introduce a fish with Ich and you have sand and LR you will probably end up using copper at which point you can never QT inverts there in the future or you will have to leave your QT empty for 12 weeks to ensure the ICH is gone. It's a big decision. If you go bare bottom it means more water changes and preventing a cycle. The Sticky makes it all very clear.

Because I'm still trying to figure out the forum, can someone post a link to sticky? I claim stupidity this Monday! Thanks!

My plan is to use ceramic rings from my DT sump and water from my DT to run my QT. It will be a bare bottom. I already got all the secondary equipment I need except test kits.
