sump pump fit garden hose

I do not know if the fitting is just stripped or if it never really fit well. But at this point the garden hose really does not stay on pump. I did not know if sump pumps were fitted with the same thread as garden hoses or if it is just close and I am forcing a cross thread to just keep it on. Any opinions, really just want a cheap pump that pumps a lot of water out quickly.

I am not sure about what you are using it for but ace has a pump that I think hooks up to a garden hose. Not sure about the quality but I don't think it is really expensive.

Is this actually part of your reef system? Garden hose is not reefsafe, the plastic can leech chemicals into the water and the metal fitting will release metals. Most threading on the output of pumps are designed for PVC fitting and piping.

I think he is saying for water changes?

Harbor freight has some pond pumps that are good for FW or SW, about $40, and go to a head height of about 11'. Not the best, but a decent pump depending on the application.

Do not get on that has oil in it, make sure it is oilless.

But even for water changes using garden hose is not a good idea at all. Remember as a kid drinking out of the garden hose, you could taste a little bit of rubber/plastic.

I do just use it to pump water out of tank, it was from ace. It does not remain in tank have been doing it for years no real problem other than keeping hose on.

Not that I am advicating this but there are connectors that have threads on one side and barbs on the other. You could get one of those with a hose clamp and it should work some thing like this http://www.marinedepot.com/Insert_Fi...FTFIHB-vi.html. you would just cut one end off the hose and slip it over the barb and then plastic clamp it down.

I've never seen a pump that uses a garden hose outlet that would be remotely considered reef safe. Even for just occasional use.

If you go to the sprinkler section at a box Home Improvement store there is a threaded 3/4 adapter from PVC threaded to hose adapter, don't get the metal one there are plastic ones specifically intended for it. That plastic adapter should work just fine, provided the pump outlet isn't stripped too bad. I'd still recommend getting a new reef safe pump.

Dont use brass hose fittings. make sure you only use plastic as metal is not good could contain copper you can buy hose from lowes and a good big zip tie and some plyers can kleep it on for you.

What about the water potable hoses for RV? They may still have metal connectors however.

The pond pump I got I had to jury rig a hose fitting adapter. I no longer use standard hose for my stuff anymore after reading post on this board.

I was going to say, you have a bigger problem using a regular garden hose with the hose itself than the fitting. Use the RV hose (you can find these in RV supplies section in walmart) for water change and you are fine. Best if you can change the fitting to plastic.
