whisper hob filter

I currently have a 90gallon setup with 60lb live rock, skimmer, and hob whisper filter. Looking at the filters that are made for this they don't contain much carbon at all. Is it better to use something completely different then the filters made for it? what do people run in their hob filter?

I am going to go ahead and tell you that using a HOB power filter is a big mistake for a system that big. Start a sump or at least get a canister filter.

I will be looking into a sump, but for now the hob/skimmer/live rock is my only option. I've had the tank up and running for almost 2 years now with no real issues. I'm just starting to get into a reef system in the past 6months by adding a few zoas, mushrooms, and candy cane pieces. The system up till then has been FOWLR.

You can just stuff cheap filter floss in there and just make sure to rinse it every couple days in rodi water and then return it. Don't count on it for providing any meaningful biological filtration over your rock and sand. It may just help filter out detritus. Personally I'd remove it. Another powerhead inside the tank to increase flow will help you more if you're wanting to start keeping corals.
