If you were doing it again, which combo of rock/sand would you use?
Our 120G arrives on Thursday. We currently have a 15G Nano and a 40G Bow. Looking back, i'm not so sure I liked the live sand, but for the new tank, I want to do the best thing I can for keeping unwanted hitchhikers OUT!
For this, I thought about using dry (and cured) marco rock, using dry sand, and then seeding with one or two smaller live rocks. Any downsides to this? If you were starting a fresh tank, what would you do? PS - nothing from the old tanks is transferring. We're wanting it to be completely new and willing to let it cycle for as long as necessary. |

No problem seeding with live rock it just may take a while to cycle. I personally am regretting small grain sand in my tank. My fish love making a mess with it. I intend to syphon it out and get larger grain.

I'm in the same boat as you, except for downsizing a bit. Instead of getting a larger grain sand as reepher315 suggested, I think I'm going to ditch sand all together and go bare bottom or get a small sheet of white starboard and silicone it to the bottom. If you're going to have SPS and need the higher flow, I think it's a great option.
