1 Inch Blue Hippo Tips

Does anyone have any tips in raising this little guy? I am feeding multiple times a day. And vitamins. I want him to get big enough to handle going into my big tank. How long will that take??

Survival rate of smaller than 2" tangs is very low. Feed it well. Keep close eye on parasites and if any cure fast. Tangs are ich magnets. Relief any stress soon as possible. Take extra care. Should grow past 3-4 inches with in few months.
Good luck and safe reefing

Tiny tangs in general, but especially hippos, are extremely fragile little things, and typically are really difficult to grow up. However, I really appreciate you coming here and asking for help, and my best advice would be just to keep him well fed, you could even supplement his diet with garlic or any other kind of *reputable* immune system booster (anything helps). Give him adequate shelter to wedge himself in, as hippos love to do for some reason, and keep his environment free from any aggressors. Medicate him if necessary and keep a close eye on him. Good luck with the little dude

I bought two micro hippos about 5 months ago. Put them in my sump surrounded with macro algae and tons of pods and then fed them nori daily. One randomly died about a month later. The other one survived and has graduated to my dt where he is now about twice his original size (about the size of a medium percula now). He is housed with some ferocious eaters (powder blue, Desjardini, and clown tangs to name a few) and is fat and healthy today.

So like others have said it really hit or miss on whether he will survive. Best of luck though.

Thanks guys for the info. I was about to buy one that small for my tank, but I guess I have to look for a little bigger one.

I bought one and got him eating mysis with selcon 3 times a day. Btw I know people suspect garlic salt is not a proper attractant but I had work on a purple tang that wouldn't eat for a couple weeks and I got my little hippo eating with it after failed attempts. So it's definitely worth a try. Once they ate it once i stopped using it and just used mysis and then moved over to mysis with selcon. I have no idea about the immune system interaction with garlic.

I put a drop of garlic power on my nori and that seems to help keep the parasites away so far. Helps build up their immune system

lets not advertise myths, there is no known study or proof of this.
