Most that are manufactured are about 30" go well with a 16" tank. I had one that size and it was too short for the skimmer and sump I wanted to use. So I had one made that is 38" tall.

you want to be able to reach into the tank. I took a measurement from under my arm to the floor and then subtracted the height of my tank. Mine ended up around 34". most factory stands seem to be too short as I wanted to look into the side not down into it.

I would build your cabinet/stand at whatever height is best for VIEWING. Most manuf stands are 30in and I feel that is too short for 1. best viewing without having to get on your knees. 2. room for skimmers, equipment, and access to the sump.
My cabinet/stand is 36" with a 24" tall tank. NOTE plenty of space to service the skimmer and other Sump items. my 0.02 hope it helps I do have to use a 3 step ladder to clean the tank but thats because I am 5,9 and the tank is also 24" deep (front to back). Only have to get the 3 step ladder out once a week so no biggie.

I'm in the same boat as Indymann. I'm 6'4 and didn't wan to have to always bend down to look at my tank so I had the stand built to be 36 inches tall. I have to use a step stool and almost all of my arm to reach the bottom of the tank but other than that I love it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have decided at 34" as my tank is only 16" in height and I will be filling it to 14" and sat down on the sofa it's the right level.

I built mine with a 40" tall cabinet. I wanted to be able to fit the skimmer in the sump plus have a shelf above the sump for food, test stuff and all the electrical and modules mounted neatly inside the stand. I also don't have to bend over much to stare at the tank now

I'm 6'3" and all my stands are 42". Perfect height for me!
