HOB Skimmers
I need to buy a HOB skimmer for my 46g bowfront, do you have any recommendations on what to get?

The eshopps psk 100h is what I have and don't think you can get a better hob skimmer for the money unless you spend triple.

I run the Reef Octopus BH1000 on my 65g and once it breaks in, it's a beast.

Thanks for the question. I am in between those two HOB skimmers too. Not sure which I'll get yet.

I ran the eshopps psk 100h and the aquamaxx hob 1... The eshopps worked great but is cheaply made and impossible to clean. The aquamaxx is built very well and completely disassembles making it easy to clean. I suggest the aquamaxx.

My local saltwater fish store recommended the Reef Octopus. He said that is the only HOB skimmer they use..

I like the reef octopus. I use the bh2000 on a 90 reef and it works really well. I also like the fact that it has a surface skimmer so it helps with keeping the surface scum to a minimum.

I like my eShopps PSK-75 but it is so sporadic on getting air-free flow on the input side I'm about ready to throw it out. As mentioned you can't clean it thoroughly. My problem is it likes to trap air and then not flow right. I've tried everything I can think of short of putting an Cobalt MJ-1200 on the intake but I don't think that'd get along with the Sicce pump built into the skimmer. I wish I had bought the Aquamaxx.

They are JNS skimmers rebranded for distribution in the US.

That's only part of the story. Aquamax has an exclusive on the lastest designs/upgrades for the U.S. market. Aquamax would have you believe that the new designs are due to their input. That may or may not be true. Ultimately it's immaterial because you'll find the best versions of JNS skimmers under the Aquamax brand first.
I have every HOB skimmer they've made, except for the XL. They're great skimmers. |
