Overflow noisy from water falling in
I have a 65g Deep Blue reef ready tank. It has a corner overflow that is a little louder than I would like for it to be. I thought that I may need to add a Durso pipe but after looking at the overflow area I notice that the noise is coming from water falling in to the corner overflow. Some of the water is coming in where the ball socket flex return tube come out of the overflow and the rest comes in through the slots. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce the noise? here is a photo of my overflow.

Raise the water level in the overflow. That way it won't have so far to fall.

Cannot tell from the picture, but are you sure it's not the siphon break hole making the noise?

Portsie, how would I raise the water level? I have tried reducing the flow but that didn't help. ca1core , I'm sure it's the water entering the overflow that causing the noise.

Well, it's kinda hard to tell from your picture, but however the water is getting into the overflow pipe, you just need to raise that up a little bit. You will probably need a new pipe.

You need to raise the Durso pipe up. You may need a piece of PVC about 1 inch longer than what is used in there. Is it all glued together or just pressed in?

Here is an image of the pipe in an unplumbed version of my tank.

Jamie I didn't plum the tank. The LFS did it but I am not able to adjust the pipe. The top portion is glued in place. See the photo above. Thanks for all your responses .

Yeah, you'll need a new pipe to raise the level in the overflow. Local box store or plumbing supply shop will have what you need.

A $.40 coupler will fix the issue. The hard part is if it's glued you will need to take the whole drain assembly out to do it.
If it's not glued it will be simple to do with a longer pipe OR cutting the current pipe and adding the coupler to make it longer. The coupler alone will probably add about 1/2" which may be enough by itself. Just reread your post, since the top is glued you will either have to purchase and rebuild the whole drain or go the coupler route. |

I fixed my problem. There is an adjustable plastic piece on the overflow that blocks some of the overflow slots that the water come in through. There are two plastic screws that hold the piece up. They can be loosened so that the plastic piece can be slid down to unblock the other water entry slots. Doing that did cause the water level in my tank to go down a little and the water level in my sump increased. I had to play with at and adjust my pump speed to get everything right.
