How to create nitrates...for a test kit?
I have a red sea pro no3 test kit and it is reading zero (stays clear), but I have my doubts about it. So, I was wondering how I can create some NO3 in a vial of my tank water to see what the test then reads? Thoughts?
Thanks

Do you know anyone who doses nitrate? Haha.
Do you have any saltpeter around? I'd be happy to give you some of my tank water. However we're a good ways apart. |

How far away is your LFS? I'm sure they could spare a vial or two.

You can get potassium nitrate sold as a stump remover. Sodium nitrate shouldn't be hard to get your hands on either. Either of those would work. Drop by the chemistry board and tell us what you get and one of us will help you figure out how much to use.

Thank you slipknot. Yes it's potasium nitrate. It's used to make corned beef. I've heard of some folks being lucky enough to find it in their grocery store. I'm not that lucky. Morton makes a curing salt that might work for you. It's got other seasoning in it but it might work for you in this instance. I wouldn't put it in my tank, but it might work for a quick test.
Do you have any fertilizer for flowers or vegetables? I'm just spit balling out of the box here. Haha. Edit; Here's a list of ingredients that's in mortons curing salt. Morton® Sugar Cure® (Plain) contains salt, sugar, propylene glycol, sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite, spice extractives and dextrose. Salt acts as a preserving agent, along with sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite, which also contribute to color and flavor development. Propylene glycol helps to keep the mixture uniform. |

Would some fish fish in a vial of water make nitrates? Or just ammonia?

American Marine makes a nitrate calibration fluid. Comes with bottle of 1ppm nitrate solution. Might be easier than creating something on your own since you'll know it's exactly 1ppm.
