Question About 3 Day Blackout For Red Slime

For those of you who have tried the three blackout to get rid of red slime, did the red slime come back? If it did how soon after? I may try it in the near future if I haven't starved out my red slime by then.

I've done it before and it will come back until you figure out what is feeding it.

+1 the 3 day black out will help a lot but you should not rely on it to cure the problem, you can also try vacuuming it out and also play with your flow to try to get flow into the trouble areas

I just manually removed as much as I could and did water changes a little more often along with feeding the tank a little less.

How often do you do water changes? What size tank?

It came right back in my case. So I added a powerhead, ran phosphate remover granules, and did a big water change - hasn't been back for months following that.

It tends to reappear in Spring and Fall and it may take 3 sessions or so of lights out to get rid of it, in which case it will show up again eventually. This organism is in every single tank you just don't always see it. It's appearance has to do with the angle of the sunlight in the room which changes with the seasons. Do a three day lights out, don't cover your tank, after manual removal. Then if need be do it again in thirty days. It won't hurt your other inhabitants, it's no different than a three day storm at sea. Repeat monthly and you should be all set for awhile. Flow doesn't change it that much. I had a pump mishap that created a complete sandstorm in my tank and the cyano was back the following day.

i did a four day black out , and treated it with drtims waste away and refresh. i also covered the whole tank with a blanket so no abatement light got in. after i added a drtims pearls reactor and made a light black out part of my reg maintenance and i have had none return for over a year. hope this helps and also fixed all dead spots in the tank so my vortechs maintain unobstructed flow.

Possibly true, however my tank is in a room with ZERO sunlight at any time, and it just appeared recently.

It always would come back for me, regardless of how long I had lights out. I just went ahead and nuked it with Boyd's Chemiclean and it has not returned since then, 8 months ago.
