I use the dc 12000 run to a manifold that controls two phosban reactors, a 1/3 HP chiller, a frag tank, and the main tank all on one single pump. So far it is a great pump. Been running for just under a year and still going strong. Haven't noticed much of a drop in pressure so haven't cleaned it yet. Saves on electricity compared to running 4 smaller pumps for all of the above.

I am using a Speedwave DC pump (1320 GPH), which is basically the same as the Jebao -- my understanding is that all of the DC pumps (sans the German ones) are made by the same manufacturer and each company just builds their own controller.
The pump holds up well and pushes a lot of water, but it definitely isn't silent. It makes a higher pitched "whine" than a typical AC pump, which I would describe as a lower-pitched "whirl." If you're interested, I'm planning to sell it soon. I have it on my breeding rack and I need more power. Hmmm... I just looked at the prices of the Jebaos and you're probably better off getting a brand new one since what I paid for the Speedwave ($160) and what I'd probably sell it for -- around 100 bucks -- doesn't make much financial sense.

thanks guys. D-nak i read the same thing about most of them being made by the same OEM. i just came across a thread that shows how to connect the DC pumps to your Apex, using the VDM module. the lower power consumption is appealing, and the ability to slow them down for feeding with the VDM is a plus. the Jebao are cheep enough to buy two, one to be used as back up. ill give them a try.

I'm using the Jebao DC-3000 pump on my skimmer and love it. That skimmer is totally silent. I'm also using the Reef Octopus dc5500 as a return pump and love that one even more. One thing that bugs me with the Jebao is that it has a ten minute feed button, but no true off switch. On a skimmer that's fine, I'll just turn it down but on a return that would be a deal breaker. My RO pump has an off, plus either an hour or 15 minute feed. The RO is now their own product and not a waveline with their name.
Either way DC is the only way to go. Controllable, silent and uses less power, hence makes less heat. |

I know it's not a DC pump, but have you considered a Vertex V6? It's pricey but it appeals to me because it uses relatively low power for an AC pump and it is from a reputable company. I have their Omega 150 on one of my tanks and it's a great skimmer. I also like the two year warranty.
You can get two DC pumps for the same price, but I like the fact that I won't have to worry about it breaking down. I've read many stories of DC pumps simply dying.

the known issues with dc is the power supply. the ones they use are not cooled property and the power supplies over heat and burn out.

D-nak i Have considered a Vertex v6 pump , but i think it will be too much GPH then what i would need. its only a 65gal tank so 1584GPH would be too much.

I use a Diablo DC-5500 on my 80g plumbed through two BRS reactors. Works great, low power and silent. I just run it at full power but plugged into my Apex so I can shut it down for feeding/maint. etc.

It really depends if you're planning to plumb through reactors or strait into the tank. The nice thing is that you can just turn it down if it's too much flow. I was on the border between the 3500 and the 5500. I'm glad I went 5500, but your tank is a little smaller. I'd say that if you're just plumbing directly into your tank, the 5500 would be overkill.
