How strong can a Mantis Shrimp be?

My objective is very simple; i want this mantis out of my LR; dead or alive!

once gone, i want to reintroduce this to my tank (i will use other thread for this but for the mean time .............. )

This is what I've done onto my suspected LR:
  • First, I squirt a freshwater onto the hole where I usually saw him; nothing happened.
  • Second, I dip it onto a bucket full of freshwater for 1 full day; nothing happened.
  • Third, I put the rock out on the dry for 1 full day yesterday; nothing happened.
  • Fourth, late night, I used my hose gun (put it to Jet mode) and shoot the hole like crazy and not only that hole, but all other holes; nothing happened.

I am thinking of using soda water and thinking of dipping it for 1 whole night.

I don't hear click anymore from my tank. I am quite confident this is the rock. The other reason is because I saw him going in and out from that particular hole in that particular rock.

How strong is a mantis shrimp?

Do you think it will survive after those fourth attempts?

Do you think I need to take necessary precaution step by dipping it in soda water overnight?

Though you may have to earn the trust of your new friend after trying to kill him for most of a week

Mantis are wicked cool and I may have to set up a tank for one at some point.

+1

You have to give him some respect for surviving while making you look like Wile E. Coyote.

If it is a "club" mantis then they are very strong, their "punches" can be equivalent to the impact of a 22 caliber bullet. And plus under water that punch creates an area of low pressure which when it implodes on itself creates even more force on its victim. As for the survivability of the mantis I don't have much info for you there. But if you bought the live rock online then it survived the shipping process which is pretty good

All hitchhiking mantis survive shipping lol. I had one that I couldn't get out to save my life. If you want to rid him of your tank - put the rock in a 10g tank & set a trap.

I'd be curious if he didn't sneak into a different rock when you weren't looking!

Stick your hand in there and find out how strong it is....be a man

Kidding of course. I don't think you want the feeling/equivalent of being shot with a low caliber bullet.

Mantis are cool and their reputation is much worse than the majority of species are likely to be. Just swap the rock out if you are confident its in it. It didn't ask to come to your tank so no reason to kill it.

Lol I saw a YouTube video of what looked like a college kid sticking his hand in front of a mantis shrimp and getting "punched by that

I agree mantis shrimps are beautiful complex creatures and if it had the choice wether to be in your tank or not it would probably choose not to be. It's kinda like stealing someone's dog and then trying to kill it because it barks too loud

I don't think the mantis has the same impact force of a .22 caliber.. it has the same speed as a .22 caliber bullet, much different measurement. They actually can't break aquarium glass like many think, and yes I saw the same video of the kid letting it punch his hand a couple times, pretty cool, but proving the punch isn't as dangerous as you'd think.

To the op, seriously, give that mantis a throne if he's still alive. He is worthy of the largest species only tank you can find. Very cool creature.

Are you sure it's still alive??? You could have killed it and now it's dead inside the rock. I had a similar situation with a carnivorous worm that drive me nuts. I would up just throwing out the rock. But the mantis is worth something to someone, so if it's still alive, then I'd put it in a 10g and set a trap as previously suggested. You don't want it dead in your tank, and rotting in the hole in the rock. Careful.

I'm pretty sure it is dead now ... but you are right .. inside the rock.

It's now the 2nd day of curing process.

Ammonia has reached almost 4 ppm (quite foul smell i tell you).

I will want to reuse this piece of rock; that's why I am doing this properly.

I would say you're going to need to remove the Rock and break it open. If you're lucky, maybe you can get it back together with some putty.
