Water Barrels
I was given four blue 55 gallon drums (food grade) yesterday that I was planning to use to transport salt and ro/di water. The drums contained 2 held liquid garlic sauce and two held Siracha sauce. These drums are the type where the entire top comes off and is secured with a metal band.
Last night I rinsed very well and let them sit overnight with a vinegar/baking soda solution. While I am sure they are clean they still have the residual odor. Do you guys think they are ok to use even though they still smell? Also, if anyone needs some in the Treasure Coast/Space Coast area I may be able to hook you up with some of the same barrels. |

My concern would be that both of those products contain oil don't they? I'd need to be darn sure it was all gone before I'd trust it. I was lucky in that the barrels I found used to hold salt!

They may have because when I first started washing the barrels there was a slight film on the water. After washing the film is no longer noticeable and it seems to be gone.

mine STILL have an odor
Mine has flammable stickers on them and when I called the barrel manufacturer they were shocked where they wound up (as they are designed for hazardous materials). I was going to ask them the best way to clean them (they, as you'd imagine, were a little amused that I had found them, then thought I was nuts...then offered no opinion).
Mine had .... favorings. Yep. There's a bottled water facility near Hot Springs, AR and the flavorings have a lot of alcohol in them. Hence the "flammable" stickers. After washing multiple times (with vinegar, baking soda) and letting them soak for days on end they sill have a slight lemon scent. Hasn't harmed my aquarium that I can tell and the sea water, once mixed, doesn't retain any smell of lemons. I've been using one for holding RODI water for almost a year now. |
