Smile Do Cooler Tanks produce better Color in Coral than Warmer Tanks?

Do Cooler Tanks produce better Color in Coral than Warmer Tanks?

I was talking with a guy who has amazing colors in his Coral.

I told him that a lot of my Corals Loose Color after I get them.

He asked me what Temperature that I kept the Tanks at and I said 78 to 80 Degrees.

He said that is the Problem.

His Tanks are kept at 73 Degrees with a Chiller.

Is there any Truth to that or do I have something else going on?

If I Lower the Temperature to 73 Degrees will I get better Color like he does?

IMO/ IME...no. I would look elsewhere. What are we talking...SPS, LPS?

I doubt it.
I would look towards nutrients and or lighting not tank temp

There have been research studies done on it and that temperature is not the ideal for a reef.

If you parallel how our reefs are bleaching from temperature swings and acidification, than the reverse should produce a better color in theory. But we've Totm's with amazing results running at warmer temps so Probably some other factors to think about.

Coral in General but if say it Helps SPS but not Zoanthids or LPS Please post your findings.

I'd say it depends on where it came from. But in general it seems most people agree on the 78-80 range.

Temp-wise, I don't think it matters so much. from an SPS perspective, the kind of not so great color can give you clues to what's going on.

For SPS, in order of importance, I'd say

1. Water Quality

2. Flow

3. Lighting

I find that rock solid, stable temp isn't really important. My tanks typically swing between 77 -83 degrees over the course of the year.
