20x12x10 frag halide light
help me decide on a small pendant, wattage, and bulb for a small frag section in my sump.
Water height is 8", and the frag section is 20"x12". I have to 250w radiums with AI hydra 52's in the DT, but want to use halide for the best growth in the frag section. DE 150? 250? SE 175? 250? Iwasaki 6500? 10k instead? What pendant would you suggest in a tight area? thanks! |

I wouldn't use 250w bulbs. They'll generate a lot of heat and that's a lot of light for 10" of water. I'm sure you'll find someone that says they've grown coral with that light in the same or less though. I'd go with a 150 or 175w bulb. I'd use availability, color and price as my deciding factor. I've used both, and DE/SE 250w bulbs and never saw much of a difference between 175 and 150w bulbs as far as growth and heat are concerned. LED is also an option. You could hang a Kessil A160w over it. I'm seeing good growth under my A350s, so I'm sure the new 160s would be good.
If you're goingg 10k, Ushio makes a good 175w bulb. It's pretty yellow, but it's bright. I'd use Phoenix bulbs for 150w and, of course, Radiums for 250.

I had a Kessil 150 over it for a while, but always got weird colors on sps. Going with halide this time for growth.
Think I am going to do a 150w DE in a parabolic reflector with Phoenix 14k bulb. That leaves me the option of going to a radium to match the DT more closely if I ever feel the need. Thanks for the input! |
