Baffle Glass
I'm building a new sump and need glass to make baffles. Anyone know where to buy it in Buffalo?

A while ago I used Solvay Glass to get some baffles. They were quick and didn't mind a small order.

For sump baffles I buy window glass from Tru value and laminate two pieces together with silicon for near 1/4" thickness; seems like the cheapest and easiest way to go.

look for 1/4" pane glass and get the edges sanded all the way around (doesn't need to be polished, just sanded)
Use a good aquarium safe Silicone (no mold inhibitor!!!). I like RTV108 its on amazon, pricey, but nice stuff

Sanding edges is easy with just about any modern sandpaper. Little diamond files do an especially nice job, and the glass doesn't slice through the paper and cut your fingers. In fact when it comes to cutting thicker stuff (thin stuff is trickier because it lacks the strength) a diamond tile blade in any circular type saw (table, chop, slide, skil...) all work well as long as the glass is kept cooled. Glass have it down scoring, fracturing, and breaking, but if you have some thicker glass around the time and mess doing it yourself with a saw can be worth it, as long as the glass isn't tempered; that will wake you up. Rtv is great for tank building but it's a wee bit like taking dynamite to a knife fight; unless you are selling finely crafted glass sumps, all the baffles need to do is weir the flow of water. The job doesn't need to be pretty or perfect. A leaking seem will never be noticed.

what else would you hold baffles in with if not RTV?
I realize we're a little off track here.. to the OP, you can get glass or acrylic baffles at HD or Lowe's or any glass shop. |

just watch the labels on the silicone - mold inhibitor will nuke the tank

silicone is RTV. And yes, I think you want GE silicone I and not silicone II which says it's mildew resistant.
*edit: looks like they both have mold inhibitor in them now? I guess ya takes yer chances. |

True, the tank builder's stuff is great to work with; you can feel the difference when you work with it. The chemists claim that there isn't anything actually "mold" resistant once the material is cured, but use the "windows and doors" stuff anyway.
