Was just cleaning QT - Royal Gramma Jumped out. Not Looking good...
I had the screen off and was cleaning the algae off the walls and it jumped out behind the cabinet. i went as fast as i could, but i had to move the cabinet and sump tank out of the way, and it was probably like 45 seconds before i finally picked him up and got him back in, breathing heavily, looks like it was beat up. he always hides, but he is just laying on the bottom of the tank in the front breathing heavy.
anything i can do at this point? it fell about 4 and half feet and was flopping around, between that and no water for 45 seconds i dont know what is worse.

try not to look at the fish, i know it sounds cruel but let it take its coarse you cant do much about it now. it either lives or it doesnt, time will tell. |

Don't feel bad. I was trying to catch a fish to put in a different tank yesterday. The fish I was trying to catch darted directly into the mouth of the carpet anemone. SNAP! My lower lip was hanging out...bummer.

RGs are naturally spooky. Laying the anti-jump screen over the area of the qt top you are not cleaning helps some. Jumping is a life-saving behavior in the ocean. Not so much in our tanks. Also maintain a careful watch on your fishes when you are working. I've seen them take awful headers and survive, but mostly let it alone, don't try to feed it til tomorrow, let it try to recuperate if it can.

I've had many fish jump over the years. My blue lined jawfish was the worst(had to seal that tank up tight). Also had bala sharks(freshwater) jump out multiple times. Only time I've ever lost a fish from going overboard was when I didn't notice it and they dry out. But they were otherwise healthy/established when they jumped. Trying to pickup an 7" bala shark that is flopping around feet a time is quite the exciting experience - plus his fins dig into you.. the jawfish was a piece of cake to return, although my cat did bat him around a bit first once he survived.. until roommate left the lid open and I was gone on a company trip... he didn't survive that.

When I was transferring livestock recently from my old tank to new, my royal gramma was hiding in a different rock than he usually does. He jumped out of the rock as I was lifting it into the new tank, standing on a stepstool - he fell almost 5 feet onto a tile floor, flopped a couple of times, and lay there gasping. I had to get down, put the rock aside, and strip off my shoulder-length glove before I could pick him up and throw him into the water. He immediately swam into some rocks and I was so worried I'd killed him; but he was out by the next morning and has been fine ever since. I hope yours is okay too!!

im happy to report he is doing well. I will def keep a close eye on him, but he was out and about, swimming around, he even ate like normal.
I am shocked.. it wasnt looking good at all. i saw him flash across the tank and i thought out of the tank, but i wasnt sure. I could not find him for 15 seconds in our out of the tank, then i spotted him on the floor behind the cabinet, he slipped out of my hands when i first grabbed him, then he dissapeared out of sight, I tried using a net, but i think i was squishing him against the cabinet, so i was trying to find him blindly feeling around with my hand. it was soo far out of reach, and i had the tank corner digging into my arm (which i have a nice black and blue from), eventually found him and grapped him by the tail and got him in. if he does make a full recovery, i will be very fortunate.
