Will this work? Directional flow in long rectangular tank?
I don't know if anyone can point me to where someone has done this before. Looking at putting maybe 3 large powerheads (like Jebao RW 20 or similar) at one end of a tank to make a river-like directional flow for a species tank. Then to allow water to return back from the downstream end, some unpowered closed loops (drill holes for a couple of maybe 2" pipes) to carry water back to the upstream end of the tank. Ie. Three RW 20's at the right side of the tank, then pvc pipes plumbed behind the tank to carry the water back passively from the left of the tank to the right.

You want to create flow from one side to the other then returning back to the side it started? nope, not going to happen without some serious closed loop action. Consider setting the tank up in a gyre and spin the water around a rock center.
The link dan provided still won't create what you are envisioning. I've seen it done right and it was not cheep.
