DSB remote or what?

I get the idea of the remote sand bed, i think. its so you can replace the sand right? i have a 55gallon sump with nothing but space. can i put a removable receptical in there and just remove it when the time comes? I just dont see the purpose of plumbing another tank to support a bucket of sand. maybe im missing the idea. help would be great!

Yes, you can do exactly that. Lots of people use a 5g bucket. It can be just that easy. In my case, I had a "spare" 120 g tank and plenty of room, so #300 of sugar fine sand and some PVC got me a very large Deep Sand Bed that can be taken off line easily if I need to do so. Whatever method you choose I think you will find the effort worthwhile.

Whether it is warranted or not, there is always the fear that a DSB can go 'bad'. I've been running one for over a decade and haven't had a problem, but there is some elegance to running one in dedicated container just in case.

I have both---two sandbeds, one in the dt, one in the sump, which means there's a stable sandbed to handle any problems that come up---if one sandbed has a minor kick up (as when we had a leak that meant taking the sump down and restoring it, and as when I got a totally new tank to attach to the original sump) I got the benefit of a functioning sandbed that could set up the other in fairly short order.
