Will a brown Mangrove with no roots grow back

Friend at LFS gave me a sick looking mangrove with no roots he said it might come back. Its not brittle when top is bent and the brown stalk isn't squishy. So I put it in a cup of fresh RO water with a squirt of skimmate will this help it grow roots?
