UV sterilizer good/bad?

Who here uses then and what exactly do they do?

I've read they kill algae spores, ich, and bacteria.

Are they needed?
If they kill bacteria isn't that hurting the ecosystem?

I run one that is way undersized for my tank but it took care of a algae bloom in my water column and I never took it off. As for ich it did nothing for me but then again it is not sized properly to my tank.

It is an excellent water clarifier. However, even if properly sized, it will not eliminate ich from a single tank solution. It will, if properly sized and plumbed properly, keep ich from spreading in a multiple tank solution.
