Reef Octopus skimmer
Hello all. I am collecting and buying parts needed for my new 75 gallon tank. I plan on doing fish with live rock.. And maybe in the far future some easy to keep corals like mushrooms. Still haven't added water or even started cycle. Still getting everything needed. I would like to buy a Reef octopus as I have heard many good reviews. My question is has anyone used the Regal-150INT??? Also why does that unit cost more money??? I see it has some type of controller for the pump.. Also there are a few others Reef Octopus that I could choose from. I would like a in-sump skimmer. Is the Regal-150INT worth the extra money? Should I get another model?

The DC pumps have a controller that allows you to increase or decrease the flow to your skimmer. And many have a feeding mode that shuts down for a period of time while feeding. The increased price is probably due to the fact that its the latest technology, and the unit comes with a controller. The increased functionality can either be good or bad in different ways. The way I look at it is, many people say the lower settings don't produce enough flow or skimmate, so they run them on the highest setting, which is what most people want anyway. And a controller is one more piece that could fail. And the jury is still out on many of the DC pumps on the market today. The (AC) Bubble blaster pump has proven to be a reliable pump for quite some time now, and theres no need to have to adjust the flow. For this reason , at this time, I would choose a Reef Octopus SRO 2000 with a Bubble Blaster pump over the Regal 150. (IMO) Tank size and livestock should determine the size of the skimmer. |

I have the Regal-150INT SSS. I like it.
But, would it not it be over kill for your 75G? |

Another option to consider might be a Vertex 130 since you tank is 75gal. Bulk Reef Supply has them on sale for $249.00.
It will be hard to find a better skimmer for that price. |

I have to say thay I'm Reef Ocopus all the way. Go for it. I love the controller and use it constantly. I can switch to a wet skim if required with only a touch and the feed mode is awesome. The quality and functionality of the DC pump for me is better than any I have owned previously. This being said it is also quiet and no vibration. I would buy one again no question.
