Deep dimension tank owners

How do you like them?

I'm thinking about my large tank build and thinking of going deep dimension.

Just looking for some insight.

I have a Marineland 250 gallon deep dimension and I love it best tank I have owned. The additional width allows for more options with your aquascape

They're good for the money. Overflow size is a little lacking, and make sure to widen the overflow teeth. Other than that I only wish it was bigger!

Yeah I was thinking about that. I have a 55 gallon in my shed right now cause I don't like the shallow depth.

Did you buy the stand with it? I've read some not shoo good reviews on that part.

Their stand is really short. I built my own nothing worse then having to sit on the floor to view your tank. it has to be short so it can fit through a standard door. I built mine in my living room.

My current setup is a 4', 21" wide and 30" deep. If I was to do it again I wouldn't go so deep, too hard to clean the lower glass. I'd keep it at a max of 26", my arms just aren't long enough

On the other side I love the extra viewing area I have on it.

Next year I'll upgrade my main DT to a 6' x 26" x 26" and re-purpose my current tank to my seahorse tank.

My tank is 6'x30"x24" tall and its great. Only issue I have is my vision, can't see as clearly in the center of the tank because of lined bifocals

I love the depth. I personally would not want anything deeper because I have an exterior center overflow and would never be able to reach it.

Yeah I understand what you are saying.
By deep dimension I mean a wider tank. I talking about from front to back instead of top to bottom. I don't like the really tall tanks.

I'm thinking of a 120 gallon that is 4'x2'x2' or something like a 200 that is 4'x3'x27".

It would basically take up the same amount of front slave as a55 but have a nice side view to and easier to scape.

The 4x2x2 is a standard 120 and will be the cheapest by far. I'm not sure what the 200g DD's go for. Probably less than 1k though. Custom would probably be 2k.

My 150 is 6 feet long, 2 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide?...deep?. (72x24x18).

I'd rather have it just a wee bit shorter, and a wee bit.. wider? deeper? how do you say it?

It to me is wider but "they" call them deeper.

To me deeper refers to top to bottom but in aquariums that is taller.

GO FIGURE, lol!
:-)

Main thing is my 55 is 48x12x21 which limits my options as far as rock work.

I rather like my 300DD. The stand is a bit short for most sumps with skimmers, so plan that part out carefully. I originally designed my filter system for use in the stand, but we ended up buying a new house and I plumbed it down to the basement instead. I really like the extra room (I now have a 150 gallon RubberMaid stock tank as a sump) that provides.

As you can walk all the way around this build (a good thing do to the distance front-to-back on the DD's...you're going to want access to at least three sides if you can't do all four), "right rear corner" only has meaning from the armchair view, so here goes.

I built the reef to run diagonally from what would normally be the left rear corner toward the right front corner - an "exclamation mark" with an LPS "island" in the right rear corner. Here's a couple shots:

And one from one of the ends:

Lots of space for coral, and plenty of swimming room for fish - with requisite hiding spots/holes through the reef as well.

Have fun!

Cheers,
Ray

How short IS the stand? When the wifey and I get a house I'm dropping a 300DD in the basement, I would like its top edge to be on par with a 90 (my 'fuge-to-be).

I have a 150 right now (72x18 widex27 tall) and I hate the dimensions on it. I'm upgrading to a 84x36 widex24 deep 315 gallon. I would never ever ever ever ever ever get an 18" wide reef again. Wider is better. Then you don't waste gallons in height.

That 315 is going to be great! Those dimensions should allow for a handful of very active swimmers along with lots of large colonies.

@toothybugs - the Monterey stand for the 300 Deep Dimension is 29" tall (LO72" X W36" X H29"). Interior height is about 26". No back panels, three front doors. Both end panels are removable to slide in/out a sump if needed, so I'd keep at least one end of the stand clear - don't put it in an alcove unless you don't plan on putting anything in or taking anything out through the ends of the stand.

If you need any more dimensions, details, drop me a PM and I'll send them out. It took me a while to put together a system that would fit in this stand, but it is quite doable.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but, rgulrich, can you take a photo of your 3-panel ATS?

I think the extra front to back depth is awesome. I debated between the 300DD and 265; and ultimately went with the latter for the extra length. But I do lament the limitations of the 24" depth. Too bad Marineland never made a 350DD.

There were rumors at one point that they were gong to make both a 350DD and a 400DD but, alas, they never did.
