How do fish know?
I put a net in the tank all the time to right snails that have flipped over. The fish don't seem to care and sometimes I have to move the net as they swim right into it. But I put the net in to get a fish out and they all run and hide. How do they know?

You might be on to something there. Maybe they see the snail in distress and think the net is a predator that is going to leave them some crumbs. Their desire for crumbs overwhelms their desire to be safe.

When it is relatively stationary (not moving) they come to inspect. When it starts moving towards them it is presumed a probable threat. This gets reaffirmed as as soon as they move the net changes direction and starts coming again.

should'nt be much of an issue unless you have an opportunistic predator in your tank, if that is the case he will get them anyway sooner or later |

My shrimp does that. If I put my hand in the tank he comes right to me and practically jumps in my hand. Even wave the net in front of the tank and he goes into hiding.
That is one of my favorite things about having a tank, the personality that all of these animals have it just amazing to watch. |
