Mushumatt's custom 100 gallon display

I wanted to create a thread where I can document the process of building my new display and setup. I used to have a 180 display at my old house that I loved, but living in an apartment I cannot have a massive tank. I was originally going to upgrade to a 40 gallon breeder display. But my father has other ideas, he has researched and built acrylic tanks without telling me. So we are going to completely DIY the tank, sump, fuge, and stand.

The reason why I have gone with such a deep tank is to give me more aquascaping room, and the ability to have a unique design.

I need people's opinions on some things, hence why I am starting this thread to have all the information in one place.

Display: 40"x30"x20"
Sump: 24"x20"x16"
Fuge: 24"x12"x20"

Return pump: Japanese iwaki 30RLT I believe is the pump, it is in storage at the moment.

Flow: 2 vortech Mp10, 2 tunze power heads not sure on the specific model with the tunze rocks to hide the power head.

lights: I need help with this because it's so deep. I would like to get away with 2 LED fixtures. But not sure if that will be enough.

Protein skimmer: Eshopps insump skimmer

ATO: Tunze nano osmolator

Livestock: Mixed reef mostly SPS/LPS maybe a BTA way in the future.

Lighting, I have decided on two Aquaillumination Hydra fifty two with the EXT mounts. Now just the power heads I have to figure out. I hope to start building the tank and such within the next two weeks.

Stand will be built out of 2x4 and 2x6 with a cherry or oak shell.

I am using Tampa bay saltwater for my baserock, their rock looks top notch. The sump/fuge is going to be made in one tank instead of two separate tanks. I have also decided on going with 2 Jebao pumps, 1 MP10, gyre, and 1 Tunze mounted in the rock work.

I am not sure that more lights will help you get any more depth penatration. Just need stronger lights. I would guess 2 is plenty. Not much for me to recommend as mine are DIY.

Sorry I didn't mean depth penetration I worded that wrong. I am fine with the par at depth. More that I do not have shadowing effect in my tank as its going to be 30" wide. But I have spoken with marine depot and a few other places and i have peace of mind that two will work. If I do have shadowing I can either supplement with 2x24w T5 HO retrofit kit for both lights. I personally would run this as a T5 HO with LED supplemation, but the energy consumption and bulb change fees are a concern for me. Not that I can't afford it, just would rather not deal with the hassle. MH fixtures would be great but energy usage and heat is a huge concern. I like the ability to connect everything to an Apex controller and have everything automated and customized to my liking.

Sorry I got zero sleep and I'm running on 36 hours of no sleep. I am kind of delirious at the moment. But stil have work to do!

Yup, 40 long/30wide/20high. I am stuck because of the amount of room I have to work with in my apartment. I also don't want to move something larger then a 100 gallon display. I feel like it gives me a large area for aquascaping. I also don't like very tall tanks, I have always been drawn into the low tanks. Something about their uniqueness I love.

Iam in process of getting a custom build 48x36x20h right now with a external overflow

I think with 20" high any light will work for us, iam going with ATI 8x54w on mine, tired LED's on my previous tank, didn't work for me

Yea 20" really isn't that deep comparably to other tanks. I have had great success with LED fixtures, so I plan to stick to them. Not the best coloration and growth comparably to when I used MH over my old 180 but still for the savings on bulbs and electric I can deal with it.

he is concerned with depth, not height. OP you said it correctly but as you can see it is wise to clarify when discussing depth - many people will think you are talking about height.

Of course I'd rather clarify with people so I can get the best input from the forum. I hope to have the tank, sump and stand built soon. Everything else will come with time. I'm in no rush to get it setup, I'm doing this right! And it's starting track season
