Skimmer spitting water? A fix. Also a note on low overhead for skimmer.
I found a good fix for the Coralife hang-on, and for other external skimmers that have air intake nipples that occasionally spit water. Top these with Airline tubing, allowed to curve so that they go back OVER the sump, but DO NOT TOUCH THE WATER with them. If they touch the water, the bubbles in the skimmer will stop (they're an air intake)---but otherwise, if the skimmer throws one of its snits, the water backing up in these air intakes will go harmlessly into your tank, not onto your carpet.
The Coralife, btw, is a good answer for tank stands with a low overhead: a ring connector unscrews below the collection chamber so you need very little overhead to lift the collection chamber off for cleaning. Probably more than one company has such a design.
