suggestions for built in filtration?

I'm relatively new to the hobby. We currently have a 40g breeder set up with a 20g sump, skimmer. We just had a 75g ******* tank with built in filtration given to us by a friend, but I'm unsure of how to set it up. I'm pretty sure it's designed to use bio balls but I've heard a lot of bad things about them. I would like to maybe try to convert the filtration to a refugium. Is that possible? Would we still need the sump? I have plenty of healthy live rock with great coraline growth. We would like to get into corals soon. We've got everything we need for it. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
