Question Too much flow?

Hey everyone,

Just curious if you think our tank will have too much flow.

Our tank is 120x29x31" ~ 470 gallons.

Right now we have the following:
Jebao WP60 on each end (5300 gph - random mode)
Jebao WP40 on each end (3400 gph - random mode)
2 Jebao WP40 near the center (3400 gph - random mode)

So (2) WP60s and (4) WP40s.

Sort of setup like this:

Also have two return pumps @ ~ 2400 gph at 0, so around 1400 gph based on our head.

One of our WP40s just died (after about 16 months no cleaning) and I ordered a Jebao RW20 (5300 gph) as a replacement.

My question is...

If I ended up replacing all WP40s and WP60s when they die with RW20 sized pumps, will I have too much flow for our tank?

I know I can dial them down, but I'm curious what everyone thinks

I think you will be able to run your side pumps at full bore and probably need to turn the mid pumps down or you're going to end up with the vortex bubbles at the front/middle.

Also good to know my Jaebos have another 6 months of time left in them :P

I am running 4 RW-20's in my 220 gallon one on each side and 2 in the back and have no issue.

Well at 100% in wave mode I will splash water out of the top of the tank so have them turned down a bit.

Thanks guys... might do RW15s in the middle.

... but I could just turn down the RW20s, can't turn up the RW15s

Just doing a mixed reef.

Also I just use else mode, so not like they'll all be running maxed out all the time...

The main issue with too much flow is in case the current is blowing directly on corals. Depending on the coral types, some lps will not be as happy and will not expand as much with higher flow.
I owned the jebaos and they are great moving pumps. Crank them on, point them in random directions and it should be all good.

Thanks

I try to point them at more random directions than blowing right on a coral.

Already had two acros snap from a WP60.

I'm about to replace the 2 WP40s and 1 RW8 in my 125 Long with 2 RW20s which should be here Tuesday. This should be an interesting little experiment :P

There is never too much flow, only that which is poorly aimed. We are trying to recreate the ocean. I've got 2 6201 streams and five 6105's in my 300 and it's not too much

2 RW20s was too much flow in my tank. I actually found an ideal setting that I would recommend 2 of these for somebody with a 6 foot tank. The problem was it was ****ing off my Nems, which means back to the store they go. Shame too because just one of those bad boys turned up could probably handle a 6 foot tank. Going to try 2 RW8s next and see if those on Max can give me the ideal flow I'm looking for. If not i'll just get the 15s and call it a day. Really wish they made a "10" though, would be perfect for what I'm trying to create.
