BRS reefsaver and PO4?
Hey guys I am a pit confused here.
so I know the pukani does leach Po4 if not proberally cured with Acid batch and LC + time. what about the BRSreefsaver I hear it's not near as bad at leaching. I have about 20# i would like to use mostly in my sump some for the DT i am settING up. ( i already have the rock) will be mostly using aqua cultered FL rock for the DT but as we all know is kinda heavy... anyway how should I cure the reffsaver? would a nice hot pressure washing do the trick? and or should i just give it a acid bath as well? what did you guys do? and what are the results? cheers |

For this rock a pressure washer should do the trick its just pure lime stone, pukani used be alive which is why it leachs decaying matyer
matter. Very few people cure this rok with acid. |

I have been adding some of their tonga in small amounts to my sump. I typically let it soak in a 5 gallon bucket with a powerhead and some GFO in a filter sock for about a week and find that it reduces the P04 levels significantly.

I have a buddy that runs a carpet cleaning biz and I can take the rock over to his place and power wash it at 100+ degerees.
wondering if I should still do the acid bath? will any muric acid at HD or lowes work I am driving over the the nearest biggest town 100 miles and I might pick some up anyway not sure I can get it here. |

There should be far less organic material in reef saver... But I would probably acid bath it as well

I thought the pressure washer was for stuff that came from the ocean and had a lot of dead critters stuck on it. Reefsaver comes from the ground where the ocean used to be, so it's just dusty. But I think it still can have phosphate that it picked up from the dirt or a long time ago in it.

Used it recently as an addition to an already running tank. You don't need to acid bath this stuff, on the other hand the Pukani, Fiji, etc. if you didn't acid bath or cure for minimum 3-4 weeks would be nasty. Just rinse/wash it to get rid of dust.
