Closed Coral
I've been having a problem with adding coral to my tank. Until around a 2 months ago things were growing great, then almost as if my tank crashed all my coral died. My fish are still healthy and not hiding. I accordingly checked the water quality to make sure all levels were correct and everything seemed normal. I waited 2-3 weeks before trying to get an anemone to start rebuilding. When dripping acclimating the anemone opened right up and looked very healthy, but as soon as it touched the top of the water in the actual tank it closed right up, and hid in the rocks. The next day I came out and it was face down in the front of my tank dead. My levels are:
Size: 65 gallon with 16X8X12 inch wet/dry sump Temp: 78.2 pH: 7.9 Ammonia: 0 Salinity: 1.025 Calcium: 400 Any other levels I can recheck to get exact numbers or get a better test. As far as water flow goes I have a newly installed Maxspect XF-130 (post tank "crash") running at 60% as well as the return pump from my sump. In the sump I have a Coralife 65gal Protein skimmer, Coralife 9w UV sterilizer, and filter medias (Bio balls, carbon bags, phosphate remover pad, polyfiber pad, and polishing pad). If anyone could help me that would be very appreciated. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions that would help me figure out what is going on in my tank. |

Did you add anything rock/sand or treat the tank with any chemicals shortly before this all started?

The only thing i have ever added to the tank was Instant Ocean's Reef Accelerator, but i only do that on a monthly basis and have since stopped. I try to keep my tank on a routine with dosing.

If not stray voltage, I would run some carbon and see how that goes. Sounds like it could be some kind of chemical. When things like this occur, always try to back track and see if you had any type of cleaning agent on your hand and then stuck your hand in the tank. Simple things like that can effect a whole tank.

Say it was a stray cleaner what is there to do? I have two different stages that have carbon filtration. Is there something I can do other than that?

Phosphate and Nitrate readings?
Had a bad test kit reading 0s, ended up being .41 phosphate and 64+ nitrate. Only noticed after 90% of the coral I added got nuked in a day or two...

Bouncing Alk, incorrect lighting or intensity. Any other elements suddenly dropping between tests for example. I doubt stray voltage affects corals much, unless it's enough for you to get zapped. What was the death of the corals like and what type of corals. Ex. (Acroporas stripping in a day)

Everything closed up and hid away in the span of a day or two. Whats concerning to me is how when I acclimate them with my water they open up and is soon a they touch in the tank water they close up. Thats more or less why im confused. I may just be reading signals wrong as well.
