Hot Weather
How are people keeping their tanks at the correct temperature? Mine is running really warm by the time I go to bed it's 28 to 29 that's 82 to 84 and then drops to around 81 or 79 by the morning. I've tired leaving the curtains closed. Leaving the window open and also freezing a bag of water in a sandwich bag and leaving it in the chamber at the back. I have a kent marine so it's a closed top. I have two fans running 24/7. I'm worried about my corals and fish dying out in that heat.

The closed top presents definite heat difficulties as they impede evaporation which can cool a tank considerably. If you can't figure out a way to get more air movement across the water a chiller may be your only option.

They're quite expensive aren't they, chillers. I'm in the UK so we only have like two months of hot weather if that lol so not sure I can justify the expense of a chiller. I might run a big desk fan tomorrow whilst I'm at work to see if that helps.

Yes they are fairly expensive and use a lot of electricity to run. Frozen bottles of water may be your best solution. You might see if some of the other Kent Marine owners have made modifications to the tank to cool it. What size is the tank?

find a clip desktop fan that you can clip on the tank.
blow wind across the surface of the water. use the medium to low fan setting. your temp will definitely go down.....but, your water evaporation be 3x-4x than normal. be prepared to replace water-evap every day. |

I lowered my low end temp to 78 so a 3 or 4 day rise during the day isn't as stressful

Are temperature fluctuations of a few degrees a problem? I would think that out in the ocean, the temp probably drops a few degrees at night.

Fans are a great, less costly, means of cooling an aquarium. Also, reducing light duration is another alternative to lowering water temp. Can you remove the top as I did with my Biocube?

Honestly there are a lot of reefers here on RC (including ROTM's and TOTM's) that run warm and several who let their temperatures fluctuate seasonally. I have been experimenting with letting mine run room temperature. I have a fan on my apex should it get tooooo warm but I see no problem with 81-82 in the day and 79 to 80 at night. As long as you aren't swinging crazy amounts you should be fine.

I've got home from work today and it's 84.7 is this a crazy temp and should I be worried. I'm going to get a fan just haven't had time yet with work but may get one later off a friend as a temp thing.

I wouldn't buy a chiller. Try the fan and/or frozen water bottle route first. Like others have said, it's more about the fluctuations that are stressful.
On the plus side, if the Lionesses win their next two matches, then he** will freeze over, and England will get some temperature relief.

I think 84.7 is getting close to the danger zone. If your house cools off at night you could run your lights during the night which will help with the tank temp.

I'm going to leave the lid open of a night and try the water bottle suggestion plus running a fan. I'll also leave the light flap open to circulate the air as well.

I'll also have a go at the changing the lights over to nighttime. It's a nightmare with a closed lid tank.

My tank is currently hitting 85F. I want to open the lid but am worried about my Midas Blenny/Firefish jumping out. This UK heatwave should go down by Thursday/Friday so hopefully everything will be OK.

I have a firefish too and that worries me as well. That's why I've never done it before, left the lid off. However, he always goes into hiding when the lights go out. So not sure if I should risk it.

I was thinking of leaving my lights off or the day. I'm new to marine, would my corals be ok with all the lights left off?

Corals are fine for a few days without lights. That will help keep your temp lower.
