Need another I.D.!

This is either red coralline or cyano bacteria.. The only thing is, from every picture I've seen of cyano bacteria, it is really stringy and goo-like. This is growing on my substrate, and it looks solid. Have no idea what it is.

Run some GFO, syphon it out daily, increase flow. Are you using rodi? How often are you doing water changes?

Definitely cyanobacteria. Siphon out what you can when doing water changes and run some GFO, as well as increasing flow across your sandbed will help.

Yep cyano and I just got rid of mine. You can run all the gfo and carbon, increase flow and vacuum it out but it will still come back until it runs it's life cycle about 8 week or so then it will go away. I would only pull the mat off once a week as it was easier to get it all up in one sheet. Of course do this with the pumps off.

Until then enjoy the pretty red/purple sandbed you have.

Although not a long term fix a 3 days light out will give you a kick start

I used to have cyano for several months but now I don't see it any more. I don't know why it vanished; maybe PO4 is too low. My ATS used to be covered with it crowding out the green algae now ATS is green thankfully. You have to keep on battling it until it disappears.

My tank is only about 4-5 months old, maybe this is just part of my tank going through its motions... Yeah, I'll keep telling myself that xD

Running GFO increasing flow, and manual removal are good things to do....however you won't fully kill it off doing that. At least in my experience....

I used Ultralife red slime remover and the cyano disappeared and has never come back. My tank is healthier looking then it ever has.
