Cycle question?
I'm not new but didn't know where to but this question.
Do I need to run powerheads during my cycle? I want to buy the Gyre 150 but I want to wait until they come out with the new controller and also the new propellers. I will be running my overflow and return pump and also my skimmer to break it in. Is this enough flow or should I buy a cheap powerhead or heads to get me though the cycle until I buy a Gyre? |

I didn't run anything during my cycle. And only started my protein skimmer after the cycle was finished when my CUC was put in.

You should have some flow, but your return pump should suffice.

I think it's fine to go without, but if you are going to want to have a standby powerhead for mixing batches of salt water for your water changes you could buy it now and then you won't feel rushed when the new gyre comes out. Like, I bought my sunsun 800 gph heads for $12 a pop on Amazon, something like that could be enough for a cuc at least so you can get a little further along before you take the plunge. It's also nice to have a backup cheap powerhead for QT even though an air stone works too depending on your setup
ETA this might do even better, the 500gph are $7 with free shipping if you have prime http://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00C...xcL&ref=plSrch

CStrickland I didn't even think about that. Thanks for the idea. I will just buy 2 powerheads and use 1 for mixing and for my QT.
Thanks again! |
