Need some fast help with a fish

Hey guys, just got this Cardinal in today I'm not sure what is wrong. He's got something going on with his gills.

I know these guys are mouth brooders so I'm not 100% that they aren't eggs, but if they aren't what do I need to do to treat him?

No one knows?

He seems healthy. Already eating in QT. respirations are slow, he's calm not scratching.

What gives?

Maybe check out the images in this thread? Your pic is a little blurry so it's hard to tell what's on his gills. Anyway, this thread has some awesome pics of cardinals mouth brooding.

Looks like lympho to me but my experience is all freshwater. Good pic, try this in the fish disease forum?

Ok so doing some more google research tonight has led me to the conclusion that these (on both gills) are tumors that are common in cardinals and jawfish.

Doing a google image search for "banggaii Cardinal tumor" reveals hundreds of images of this exact thing.

Apparently there is nothing you can do, these tumors appear as the fish is ending its life span.

So should I try to return him? Or should I let him live out the rest of his life in peace in my tank?

I think I will keep him and let him live the rest of his life in stability. If I return him, sure I'll get my 15 bucks back, but he will go back and probably die there, in a bare glass cube.

Keeping him is the closest thing I can do to letting him go.

Sorry to hear about your fish, glad your gonna keep him, he might not have long to live but at least he will be happier in your tank than the lfs.

He doesn't seem in any distress, like I said he's breathing easy and seems healthy. He may have a lot of life left in them old fins.

Aww the poor thing, at least you know what it is. If he doesn't seem to be struggling then who knows, might have another year. But I'm with ericarenee, I'd be pretty upset if the LFS sold me a fish with such an obvious health issue.

I don't think it was intentional. I didn't notice until I got it home, and I'm not sure they did either.

If you have a good relationship with the LFS you could do both. Make a case for keeping him in a stress free environment (your tank) but also ask if you could get some store credit. Either way I really like that you have decided to keep the fish, it would be hard for me to justify returning it for the $15. On the other hand I have given fish back just because they did not mix well with my tank and have been given small things later on. I guess what I am ultimately saying is that while largely the role of the LFS is to make money and sell things, they are also a great resource if you have a good relationship with them.

Sooo

Upon closer inspection it appears the small clown I got from the same place has an eroded gill cover. Maybe hlle?

So I guess I am returning both of them today, and I suppose I will be mail ordering my fish from this point out since the only LFS around can't seem to sell a healthy fish.

This will make 3 that I've returned in less than 24hrs.

can't tell from the pic but that is not good, nice looking clown also.

I have had very good luck with fish from bluezoo aquatics and fosters and smith however I haven't bought any fish from F&S sense they switched to petco

They made it right, they took back both animals. He put the banggai in the display tank and he said he would just live there. He put the clown in a hospital tank. He gave me my money back plus told me to pick two replacements. So I got another clown that appeared healthy this time. Same kind, an Osci/black mix, plus an engineer goby. He also through in a free ball of chaeto.

Both the engineer and new clown seem healthy in QT. I'm going to give them till Sunday then start some prazipro treatment on all.
