bought first two corals

I bought my first two corals, probably a little rushed.

Here they are.

and

and then the goby got involved

i uncovered it and moved it away from that rock, anything i should do to prevent this? maybe reduce the sand in the front of my tank? i feel like that would be temporary, as the goby does what he wants.

I would place the coral on a small rock off the sandbed, but still the goby can cover it. my goby used to grab sand then swim halfway up the tank to sift it getting sand everywhere but corals were fine, the flow blew off the sand

I have the same goby in my tank, and he seems to enjoy burying my pagoda cup!

He did it again over night, i had to switch him and the palythoas, hopefully they do better there. i also probably need to glue the zoas onto the rock, do i need to pull everything out to do that or can i glue it in the tank?

My Hectors goby sprinkles sand all over everything in the tank, notice I said "sprinkles" Like a dusting. I've had to adjust my flow since I got him, but he sure is a cool little guy and wants to bff's with all of the other fish and is.

The gel superglue will glue in the tank underwater.

Frogspawn belongs in the sand? i just moved it to the ledge about 2-4 inches above my sand bed. If you have him in the sand how do you prevent it from being knocked over.

Frogspawn are pretty finicky in a unique way. Mine prefer high up, lots of light, and no flow.

Every frogspawn I've owned like it best in the sand as do my hammers as well as torches that I've had in the past.

They have better color IMO when in low light, low flow in the sand: and get a bit faded when too much light. If too much flow they don't have good PE.

What do you mean getting knocked over? There is no way they can get knocked over when in the sand.

I'm going to experiment tomorrow and see what they like in the new tank they are in. I've always done best with them in the sand, low gentle flow and low light. Same as my Duncans

My hammers and frogspawns have always been in the rock and do great but they are close to the sand as they do like lower light

Yes you can do this but you should always put any new corals in the sand to acclimate to your tank and lighting then move them around to find their sweet spot.

I say sand simply to mean the bottom of the tank.

Mine too! When the lights ramp up, it opens up and is easily the biggest thing in the tank!

They came from a tank with lights brighter than mine

Looks good. But if they came from a tank with lights of lower lighting than yours you would not have the same results. They have to acclimate to the new tank and that's why you put them on the bottom to start with. My tank isn't that old so all I have are frags so pictures of them won't be of any help. I got out of the hobby for a long time and just getting back into it. I'm starting it back up the cheap way with frags

Your tank is beautiful, all softies and LPS? also what is that pink coral in the center?

I am worried about my frogspawn i don't know how to properly place it onto a rock. With it on a frag plug, if i leave it on the frag plug it will be to far from the rock to grow onto the rock properly. Should i trim the long end of the frag plug off? or cut the entire frag off the plug then place that.

Also will it be ok to be at a pretty extreme angle? will it grow at around a 45+ degree angle?

Most frags are held on with super glue and the coral can be easily broken off at the super glue, then just stick the coral in an appropriate sized hole in the rock

That depends. I'll leave it at that. This is a very deep subject. No damage to the frag by breaking the super glue. The polyps will go in and it might be upset for a while but most come out after you put them in a place they like and leave them alone for half an hour or so once they are acclimated.

What I would do is leave it on the frag plug for now and move it around every 5 days or so and see where it likes it the best. Then break it off of the plug and gel super glue it to that spot. Do NOT glue it until you find a place IT likes, not what you like. You can try where you want it and make changes to rock work or create some shading for it so it's happy. Sometimes you have to go with what the coral wants.
