xpost 110EXT help

Hey guys I posted this a few days ago to reef octopus sponsor forum, but haven't received a response. Thanks for any, and all help.

I allowed my 110ext to sit running water through it for about 8 weeks in order to break it in. I believe it is now broken in because I cleaned a ton of stuff out from the head. Anyway, I am using it in an external configuration, and can't get it to stop overflowing. I have read I want water only 3/4 up the body, but no matter what I do I can not achieve this. Any, and all help is appreciated. I have posted pictures below demonstrating where water lines are in the skimmer. I have the valve 100% open. closing it only overflows it more.

Also on one other note. Could someone explain how the silencer works, which side should be capped (maybe both?), and does it affect water levels at all?

Also worth noting I have the recirculating pump off, in order to diagnose this problem. When the pump is on it just overflows the skimmer. The way I broke the skimmer in was to run a line from the head back to the sump so that no water ever left the system.

Thanks again in advanced guys. Sorry for my ignorance.
