Surprised the damage an urchin could do

So I have this purple urchin. Don't like him, pretty boring, but now I know why I really don't like him. He ate a large patch of coralline on the wp40.
Not only that, the surprising part is the damage he did to the plastic of the wp40 while removing the coraline.
It looks like it knurled the plastic. It's all chewed up, kind of like how a hard plastic dog toy gets after they've chewed on it for a while.
I was stunned to see that. I knew it may eat coralline, but to tear up plastic like that... wow.

Looks like a rock borer urchin, as in "eats rock". Plastic is a minor thing by comparison.

Well that would explain that.

This was a surprise resident I most likely would have never added intentionally.
He was in a large tank that I got all of the livestock from when a fellow reefer was breaking down their tank. Couldn't just leave him.

Hopefully I can trade this guy for something. He may become a donation to the lfs

Just be glad you don't have an acrylic tank.

....or MaxSpect Gyres for water flow. When mine wreaked havoc on my pumps I not only posted pictures, but I also pulled them and put them in their own aquarium. Of course nobody believed that cute little ROCK BORING URCHINS could cause damage like that. Heh!
