Who's been stung?

A number of venomous fish are available in the hobby, although I've never been jabbed myself by anything other than a bristle worm, I know someone that was caught out by a foxface rabbitfish, when picking up a rock.

Anyone else been stung and how did it happen? How bad was the pain?

I've never been stung by a venomous fish, but I once had a FW pictus cat jump out of a net and it's barbed pectoral fin went right into my thigh and it got stuck there, flopping around and twisting that spike in my thigh.
I had a heck of a time getting it out!

Magnifica anemone latched onto my forearm one time. Didn't want to injure the animal, so took care in extracting said arm. Was like a bad case of poison Ivy (or nettles for the Brits among us). Also swam though a swarm if sea wasps while diving one time. THAT was painful, though the dive boat kept meat tenerizervon hand as an unconventional way to ease the pain if the stings.

Dwarf lionfish. Felt like bee sting. I immediately put my thumb in as hot of water as I could stand for 5 minutes or so, then milk for a bit.supposedly milk can neutralize some venoms. Idk if it's irked or not but it didn't hurt to try. Palm was tender for a day or so

I had a large carpet anemone that had eaten a few fish. While reaching in the tank for cleaning my foxface got spooked and darted into the anemone. I was so ****ed that it was going to eat my favorite fish. Before I could think about it I grabbed the foxface from the anemone.

I'm not sure which one hurt but it felt like a bee sting in each finger. It hurt for a few hours. After a few weeks in QT the fish was fine and the anemone was sold.

Never aquarium wise. Diving . . . . vinegar helps to neutralize, lacking vinegar, urine works well.

idk if they were legit box jelly fish. if you were hit by a swarm of them the encounter would most definitely kill you. one full size box jelly has enough venom to kill over 50 people...

My understanding of lion fish venom is that is similar to that of bee/wasp venom. If you are allergic the reaction could be deadly, if not it hurts and swells. Just not sure you want to find out the hard way.

Stung by dead Foxface removing him from tank. Lesson learned. Like a beesting or cigarette burn.
Stung by elegance coral. Had a small fresh cut on a finger i didnt notice and got too close to him and Wham. That one hurt for a few days. Lymph node swelled in arm for couple months.

Lesson: Mind the small cuts when servicing livestock.

I had a large chunk took out of my elbow by a eel once.

I was also tagged once by pretty good by a lion, it didn't do much. Didn't really hurt either. I kept waiting and wondering if I should go to the ER, but nothing happened.

Years ago, I was careless while cleaning my tank and got nailed by my lionfish on my fingertip. It hurt way worse than any bee/wasp sting. Within an hour the pain radiated past my elbow, then it died down. The fingertip was sore/tender for a couple weeks. Made a believer out of me!

Jellyfish as well and nothing from the tank. I do not have anything swimming around that can sting me as of yet. Probably a good idea because ill probably forget and rub up against it while i am cleaning the tank.

Ohhh also been stung by a bee as well :P

i've been sliced, diced and stung by about everything out there....foot long lion was the worst for pain and swelling, nastiest was a 12" carpet anemone.
most venom is protein based so 104 degree water is the best treatment, not urine...lol

I've seen the result of a rabbitfish sting---necrosis (death and blackening of tissue) over half the thumb, possibly leading to amputation.

And worth a read: the sticky on palythoa toxin in the NTTH forum. That's sent no few hobbyists to the ER, some in very dicey condition.
