Ghost Overflow or Reef Synergy Overflow

I am interested in purchasing a new overflow system and have settle on either the redesigned Ghost overflow or the Reef synergy system.
I know the original design was a result of a partnership between Reef Savvy (Felix) and Synergy Reef. Now they both seem to be offering very similar products.
Which system would you recommend?

Look into modularmarine on ebay. He builds the same type of overflows and will customize to any length/size you want. The others didn't appear to be nearly as accommodating from what I could tell when I was looking into overflows.

Note: I don't have mine in operation yet since the tank is still being built, so I can't guarantee it works as well as it looks .

$200+ for an acrylic box? No thanks. I built my internal overflow box for about $50 including silicone and glass. Its 42" wide and has no teeth which means I'm not killing my surface skimming like those boxes do. You would be lucky to run half the rated capacity through those boxes before they start making noise. Go with a true coast-to-coast, you will appreciate the advantages.

I agree with you on the price RocketEngineer, it is indeed a rip off for the 1/4" acrylic overflow box. BTW it is not $200 but $283.12 for a 20" overflow, in addition to that Vanessa at synergyreef.com was so rude to me when I tried to buy one(she had a defective one and was ready to ship it to me).


but how does a teethless overflow work well? could you explain that? I do understand that the top film of the water column will be effectively removed by a teethless overflow, but it could also take the fish along with it.

I have seen the teethed overflow also very efficient in removing the top film on the water column when the flow is adjusted correctly.

I agree with silicone, glass and building our own overflow (I have done, doing and will do DIY projects of my share) but it may look little ugly on a expensive sleek tank. Just my opinion. Also, with true coast to coast there will be more dead space. A less space occupying slim overflow will now be a hindrance to light causing shadows and it will occupy very less space inside the tank unlike the true coast to coast overflow.

You mean the beanAnimal type ones who call themselves synergyreef.com, reefsavy.com, Modular Marine etc...?

They all are more or less the same design (except for magnetic weirs and other minor differences), they all seem to utilize BeanAnimal idea on the back of the tank while using a 1.5" slim from box with wiers.

They all should work fantastic for a small tank or big tank. Small tank or big tank it doesn't matter, if you want a noise free overflow then buy one of these overflow boxes that utilize the BeanAnimal, i.e., the guy William Brunett's idea.

Yes it is worth it. A silent tank is worth more than anything in this hobby. I would go with modular design, because they are not overpriced and rude like the synergyreef.com

i've always hated the internal overflow boxes because of space taken for such small surface skimming and they get filled with waste very fast.
I just ordered a 16" synergy overflow from BRS. I've got a custom 110G coming and need this tank to be dead silent and with the $160 price its maybe $50 more than something else i would purchase that I would surely regret few months later.

Have you installed the overflow box? How hard is it to install and how does it work for you? I am on the fence of buying one but can't really decide. If you could share your experience I'd really appreciate it.

I am new to the whole ghost overflow. I would be looking to get one for a 75 gal tank I will be getting soon. Does anyone have a specific recommendation including size/flow? Thanks

It seems to be best value. At 12" its a little small but for $120 and it comes with the drill bit I think this is a value.

U may want to check BRS. I saw about a week ago they had the modular marine boxes on sale.

As far as size. I would get as big of one that u can fit in the tank. With the teeth u are already cutting down on surface skimming so the longer the box the better. If u are comfortable working with glass & acrylic I would recommend to diy. That way u can size it perfectly to your tank, skip the teeth for better surface skimming & do a glass exterior box so u aren't relying on the gaskets to keep it from leaking.

If u don't want to diy then I suggest getting one as big as u can fit & make sure the exterior box is as long as the interior. One of the problems with these types of boxes when they first came out was the exterior box was to small. Although u could squeeze the plumbing into the box, it made for inconsistencies in the drains because the exterior box was to small. The newer designs have addressed it by making both boxes the same length.

Imo the box u linked would be to small. I would try to get a 36" for your 48" tank. At the very least a 24" box.
