closed or open ato

Looking at planning my sump and deciding on including an ato in the sump or having and external ato , my question is my ato will be included in my sump and be open or perhaps another ten gallon tank . My question is it best to have it open and add Kalk and such or have a closed container ? Perhaps I'm maybe just over thinking this

as i hear it, an open ato with kalk reduces the potency of the kalk. plus i dont think id want the water evaporating out of the ato also.
