tank question

i was wondering if these are feezeable at all? untill i have enough expserince over time i have a 40 gallon breeder and some sand about a 3 -4 inch sand barrier they are over hanging drains to drain into a sump and then get a sump that pulls the water back into the tank? i know their are chances that it will over flow but my sump will be a 40 dallon but my goal is to have enough water room so that if water wont come up that theres enough room for a time being to have some extra rooom, i hope to maybe to have a sump same size as my main tank but as time goes on ill turn the 40 into a sump so i can buy a larger size one as time goes on

Don't really know, if you are talking about the hang on type overflow, it should be o.k. If you can, explain it a little more.
