Looking for right skimmer

Dear all,

My total tank volume is 420 liters. Presently I have a JNS sk2 skimmer rated 800 liters but I am thinking to change a new more efficient skimmer , looking between BK vs Deltec brand.

My present allowable base size between 33 * 20 * 59 cm but I am open up possibility for other measurement. As I can make a new sump but does not want to be restricted only due to base measurement . All I need is an efficient and more longer lasting skimmer. Hope this will be my last skimmer unless I upgrade to a more larger tank in the future.

My present sump ;

My target is for a full SPS tank , presently just starting shifting to Zeovit system.

All your values suggestion will be great and help to to me! Thanks !

Cheers,

MD

Look into Reef Octopus and do not go too big. They will list what their skimmers are rated for under light, medium, and heavy usage. Do not go over those recommendations as any skimmer that is too big will not work correctly.

Thanks for your advise . I wish to have some review or advises between Bubble King and Deltec. Perhaps specifically Bubble King Mini 200 vs Deltec SC 1455.

I don't know if both are fit for my tank size and its efficiency.

I have seen premium aquatic carries Bubble King but I wonder where can I buy Deltec's?

Hope to hear from you all at the soonest .

Cheers,

MD

For your tank a BK180 would be a perfect skimmer.

Thanks mike and Vinny,

I learned BK has products produced in China and the quality is far less than those they produced in Germany. I wish to compare between Deltec and BK as both are German brand. Deltec price seems to be much lower than BK?

My Sump is with limited spaces I wonder if there is any differences in performance for skimmer where in pumps is located outside as against those within the Connes base, aside from easy pump maintenance. As much as possible I will choose pumps in the cone's base unless the con is more than pro.

But as stated, I will not restricted due to sump space since I will much willing to build a new sump than buying something that will not effectively performed the skimming job .

Lastly, what should be consider as a good skimmer? My SK2 skimmed also dark stuff and water also dark but not as dark as someone has , I know it may be the dirt varies among tanks but I feel it is not the best skimmer and I want to have the best as I am now starting into Zeovit system .

Huh?? What BK products are produced in China?? Please elaborate? I think you are mistaken. I know that RE is building some custom or modified versions of the BK skimmers for a company in China. I think this company is selling them under another brand name but those skimmers are originating from the factory in Germany and are not being produced in China.

MD,
Your tank is about 100 gallons.
Be careful NOT to oversize a BK skimmer, it will not produce constantly if you do.

Looking for right skimmer

Thanks Vinny,

So BK mini 180 and Deltec SC 1455? I saw the Deltec SC 1351 looks not enough as it is rated 300 liters

I am choosing between below three? Are they good for me ?;

Are those over killed to my system ?

That's not true as far as I am aware. All BK products are produced in Germany including those produced for another company that is marketed under another name.

I can't help but wonder if the product your supplier is talking about is from Vertex. Royal Exclusiv was making products (Alpha Skimmers and pumps) for them but that is no longer the case and Vertex (as I understand) may be having some of those items produced in China instead of Germany.

Scott would be the one to give you a recommendation on BK skimmers, he is now their US representative. You do not want to oversize.
In the US we have trouble getting Deltec parts, don't know your situation .

Scott?

Yea, the mini 200 would be way too big for his tank.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for reply.

Yes, I think may be the information of local suppliers are not true with unknown reason for such speculation or perhaps want to offer me other brand.

So sad the Mini BK 200 is not suitable for my tank as I like they have the RD3 speedy pump. I wonder BK 180 pumps also red dragon ?

Please give me an advise which is best for my tank and a little excess just in case I when a further upgrade then but certainly not oversized.

Thanks

MD

Yes , there is also couple of my friend advise me with MINi BK 180 , it has the same foot print as that of 200 but 180 does not have the RD3 speedy pump as that of 200 and I wonder if it also use red dragon pump. Have taken up this questions too with Scott.

Appreciated for your precious advise.

Looking for right skimmer

Furthermore , my sump water level is about 30 cm of which I saw the water level of Mini BK 180 is between 13 cm to 30 cm. as with my present existing SK2 I have to elevate with a plastic tray of about 7 cm or else water will overpass the water level Tolerance of the skimmer . I recall the allowable water level of SK2 is around 22 to 25 cm. that is why I have to elevate with the help of the 7 cm plastic tray as my sump water level is about 30 cm.

Foot print of JNS - sk2 is 33 cm x 20 cm x 59 cm . Skimmer Chamber diameter : 15 cm

Here with I posted the area draft of my tank and sump as well as my existing JNS SK 2 skimmer for your reference

Lastly , As for guidance in choosing the right skimmer , I wonder aside from foot print , water level tolerance , water flow and air draw too? I saw BK 180 air draw (air inlet ) is 1200 l/ hr . While Deltec SC 1455 was around 600 l/hr and mine existing sk2 is only around 750 l/ hr. Will this need to be consider in choosing the efficient skimmer ? And how about the water flow of the skimmer does It also criteria of choosing ?

Cheers,

MD

The Mini 180 does not include the RD3. I wouldn't suggest the 200 series for your setup. It won't be consistent as it is too large.

Don't get all wraped up in air draw. Air draw is for bragging rights. Just because a skimmer touts the most air draw doesn't mean much since you end up dialing it back anyway when you tune. This includes the BK. It's all a matter of tuning and you would never run the skimmer with the volute adjusted to maximum air draw or in the case of the RD3, you would never run it at full power for max air draw. As such, In my opinion, those numbers are mostly useless. Same can be said about water flow. In the end, it's all about contact time and balance. Not who has the most air flow or water flow At least when comparing skimmers with similar body sizes. In all my years in this hobby, those were two factors that I never really put much weight into when choosing a skimmer and I've had a LOT of skimmers over the years. With air and water flow in a skimmer, there is a point of diminishing returns.

As for water level, every skimmer has a "best water level" range and ideally you want to target that range but every tank is different too. Things like salinity and dissolved organics play a direct role in what will work best for your skimmer. Generally that level is within the best range of the skimmer but in case of very load levels of disslved organics or low salinity, best level could been deeper than the manufacturer recommends. I suggest reading the manuals for the skimmers you are interested in and seeing what is recommended.

thanks Scott,

you been very helpful to me even with other subject I posted that seeking advises.

well noted. but in the manual, the manfacturer's recomended is also what I usually look into as well as the rating of the skimmers. for intances, when I first purchase the JNS SK-2 aside that I am don't. have specialist guiding me then, I saw that rating of that skimers is 800 liters volume and since my total volume is 420 liters so I think that is good enough for me in case of upgrade my system or in case manufactures oversizing their product's specs. so, I really don't. know what else i have to look into the manual and what is the most important criteris for choosing a good skimmers.

I am neither think my existing skimmers is bad or good, as it produce skimate and dirty water but colors may not be like moist of the guys here which is dark black color, mine is just dark brown to mormal black color and of coarse this may also related to loading of live stocks of each tanks.

cheers,

MD
