Bulkhead Question

I am stuck putting the nut on the water side of the sump in 2 spots. How can I keep the bulkhead from leaking? The gasket is against the nut on the water side, but I think water is traveling through the threads. Can I use plumbers putty/TFE paste (my favorite) where the nut screws against the gasket to keep it from leaking? Any other ideas?
