Anthias question

Do dispar anthias and lyretail anthias mix well in systems? More so is there an issue with lyretail males.

Should add I have a 90 gallon with 30 sump and reef octopus 150. Stock is 5 dispar, 1 purple tang, and a female Lubbock wrasse. I am wondering because a friend has a harem of lyretails and 2 became males they fight and he wanted to know if I wanted the other male. Just don't want to take him if I'll have issues.

My male lyretail didn't bother my barlett's back when I had them. But he really bothered my female lyretails. Even if yours does I think you have enough that his aggression could be spread pretty well amongst the 5 of them. Overall they're not very bad fish.

Ok thats good to hear another question I have is size. I think my stock is light minus the purple the male I am offered if still not that big when he is full grown will that size fish and the purple feel overcrowded? This male if I get him will be the last fish. Thanks

They don't get very big. I had 5 anthias in my 75g along with a mimic tang and a couple other misc fish. But 90g is small for a purple tang....

Yeah when I got him I was reading mixed things even on here about some people saying it is ok. But now seeing it first hand I need to work something out to let him go to a bigger tank and look into a kole or tomini.

I have lyretails and dispars, no problem at all, actually the lyretails helped the dispars adapt to coming out and eat by allowing them to join in, dispars are much more skittish and small ones can easily just hide and never come out.

That is good to hear. How many of each do you have? Was wondering if I should run out and get him some ladies or just let him be with the dispars.

Not to hijack this thread, but.....I have been looking a getting a few of these myself. I also have a 90 gallon with 2 clowns, and a yellow tang. How many would you suggest getting? What would you recommend going with the Dispars, or the Lyretails?

Thanks!

I always advise at least 2-3 females per male to spread around his keeping them in check so it doesn't just stress a single out.
I have 4 female lyres to one male, and 4 dispars that are pretty young still, sure all females.

Male Lyretail Anthias will hassle the females to keep them from changing, I believe this is normal behavior for this fish. Mine will flash quickly near the females and startle them, but never nips or cause any physical damage... all from my observations over the past 14 months.

Dispar over Lyretail every time for me. I find the latter disagreeable and stopped keeping them years ago in favor of some of the more attractive species. All the Franzia sub genus are a PITA.

Update I grabbed the super male last night. My buddy gave me 2 of the females from his group of 8. Told me it is easier this way since they come from the same group. Put them in the tank and right away joined up with the group of 5 dispars. Really is awesome to see. My super male dispar did have a little issue with the other male but after time it was fine. Thanks for the advice everyone.
