Iwaki 40 loud

Do you guys think it's possible to mitigate the noise of a Iwaki 40 RLT so I can keep it running in my living room. Right now it is just too loud. Would I just be better off with a submersible pump?

The pump put out a lot of vibration on the stand so I know that is a source. Also the wet side makes a lot of noise too, will this dissipate after a break in period?

My tank is a 75 display with DIY 40 breeder sump. Iwaki is plumbed using 1" PVC return and sump feed. Sump is drilled.

I know they have a hum to them I think I have a 30 model on my 120 so a 40 on a 75 gallon tank, I am surprised. I have a nice thick piece of rubber under mine.

Is the 40 you have fan cooled? Noise is either from pump vibration, motor hum, or fan noise. First can be fixed easily with a pump pad, latter two not so easily. You can get a non fan cooled model, though that'd be smaller; motor hum is what it is.

There are other options that will be essentially silent.

Update: I bought some 1" braided vinyl and Sch 80 barbed fittings. It has reduced the noise to a light humm and thus far acceptable for the wife. Only problem was that there isn't enough room under the stand. I'll have to locate the pump outside of the stand. I'll take a picture later but with the 40 breeder there isn't much flexibility.

Has anyone used the silicone tubing from BRS for this purpose? I've heard it's softer thus should reduce vibration transfer even further.

My problem is to keep my pump under the stand I have to make a 90 degree turn with very little room.

Any ideas, thoughts? This is a rare time that I've exhausted my ideas.

I would live to keep the pump, and keep it here in the stand.

Make the turn with rigid PVC, and just use the vinyl to couple the pump.

I tried that however with all the different fittings there just isn't room. I think I may just have to make a kind of Cabinet to put the pump in. I can also keep other equipment and supplies there too.

Put the union on the pump end & run a 90 out of the sump with a valve.

build yourself a cabinet next to your stand to store some extra tank things in might not look to bad or matching ones side by side to your tank

I think this may be my only choice. It will also help isolate the pump noise further.

There just isn't room for a PVC 90, all the other fittings, and the pump. This pump is huge, very long.

Here is it next to a gallon of vinegar

Get an internal return pump, maybe a Eheim 1260. See you in about 20 years when it wears out.

Have considered that but after all the trouble of getting this pump and the sump drilled I hate to give up on it

Ok so now I have noticed that the pump is making a kind of grinding sound, almost like its sucking air of course it isn't. Is this normal or should I take it apart and look? I took it apart and cleaned it before I plumbed it in. Is this normal, will it eventually break in like other pumps?

Is it normal for the wet side to make a bit of a grinding noise before it breaks in?

The pump should be pretty silent except for any fan noise.

What could be causing the noise? It almost sounds like it's sucking air, but it clearly isn't.

When I took it apart all the bearings look great.

Could it be that it's misaligned?

Try plugging it in dry for just a second to see if there is any noise.
Do not run for too long dry!

Ok so I call Iwaki America and after a few minuets it was suggested that it could be cavitation inside the impeller chamber. So I restricted on of my two out lets and the noise was gone!!!! Guess I need to get a ball valve and restrict the flow until the noise is gone!

Wow what a relief, I was worried the bearings where going out. Not a bad deal for 75$

Thanks all for the Help!!
