Metal Stand Advice
Hello All,
Petco did it again, the $1 a gallon sale. Well I have bought 3 new tanks, a 40 Breeder(wanted one of these for years) and 2 20 Longs. I've researched lots of stand plans, and have decided to have a metal stand made. I'm attempting something a little different to me, a 2 tank set up. 40B will be the main DT holding softies(mostly Zoas) with a few fish, and 1 20L a Mantis habitat. The other 20L I planned on making the sump. I have a ROUGH drawing for my welder friend who said he'd make my stand. Just wanted to get some of the experts opinions. The basics of the stand will be 36.5"x18.5"x40" out of 1" square tubing. The 20L will be framed centered 20" up from the ground leaving clearance for maintenance of both sump and Mantis habitat. I was told I should make the bottom frame wider than the top. So in my sketch I made it a half inch wider and longer. Is this necessary? If it is, is the half inch sufficient or do I need to make it larger? Any and all suggestions are more than welcomed. Nothing has been started yet, so changes can easily be made. |

IMHO, you don't need to make it any larger than the tank size. What are you going to about feet/legs? What type of flooring is it sitting on? I'm going to build a metal stand for a 40br with a 29 sump. I'm undecided on the base as yet. I'm fairly certain I'm going with a solid base no feet/legs. It will sit on carpet. So thinking of attaching it to a 3/4" wood base. I've read your sump shouldn't sit on carpet do to upward pressure on bottom tank glass. Send me a link to your build thread, Good luck Dan
